Mom

JOSEPHINE MARY, (Mom to Greg & Larry) born Dottino,Oct.21,1924 in Fairview N.J. where she and her two sisters Mary and Rosy grew up. Her father, at the age of 13, came from Averza, district of Caserta near Naples. His fathers name was Giuseppe Chettapadre he had a small farm and was trading cattles. When he came to the USA in about 1901, a well to do family by the name of Dottino asked them to take their name to the new country, having no offsprings, and gave them financial support. After Giuseppe came with one or two sons to the USA, they all worked, saved money and sent after all the members in the Family. Albert worked on the Railroad in Pennsylvania and when they had enough money, father and 3 sons opened a butcherstore in Edgewater,N.J

. Only Angela went back to Averza with her husband, where we visited her in 1965, a wonderful lady with a beautiful family, her son became the major. Jo’s mother,Bridget Nunziato was born in Hoboken,at Castle Hights, her parents came from Italy(or Corsica), originally Anunciato, near Monte Cassino north of Naples.

There is a connection with Napoleon Bonaparte through the La Marca’s,her mothers maden name. There are relatives in Pennsylvania, where Napoleons brother came and left a family. Albert bought an apartmenthouse with several stores at Nungassers corner. where we were able to stay during my residency,1954-56. Jo’sister Mary became a nurse, married Dr.Carlos Silva moved to Cuba, he had his own Hospital in Placetas but in1960 had to flee from Castro and practiced in Union City N.J. until,in 1987, he retired in Florida. Rosy worked in different offices and also retired in Florida. Albert had Ca of the Colon at the age of 69.was,operated at Mary Immaculate Hospital in 1955,died 91 years old of renal failure, Bridget, her mother had Ca of the pancreas and died in 1973, 73 years old. Rosy had Ca of the colon and was successfully operated in about 1996. Jo went to local primary and highschool and received a scolarship in mathematic to Rutgers University, She worked for one year for Metropolitan Life Ins.Comp in New York City, then entered the nursing school at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hoboken, like her sister, and during W.W.II became a cadett.Following her graduation she worked as an R.N. and later supervisor there, when we met . She had our two boys at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center L.I. and after I started my own practice stayed on my side as my partner throughout my professional life In about 1978 she became active in voluntary work in Nyack, was the leading force in building the Nyack multipurpose Senior Center and its president for many years . Later she volunteered for the Center for unwed mothers in Spring Valley, always hard working, quick and clever and liked by everyone.

I will allways remember one of her quotes from Nov.12,1971: “Aging is a process when the clock goes around faster than you can keep up with !”

Josephine survived and was very active for over 3 years after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. In August of 2013 the cancer had caught up with her and she passed on August 18th. Her battle in the last weeks of her life were a testamoney to her strength and desire to be with her loving family till the end. (Mom and my Dad will be missed by their children and grandchildren wh all loved them dearely).
